As I am such a control-freak, here are some helpful tips about characters here :)

Characters, unless canon, can be reserved indefinitely. Unless, of course, their owner is inactive for too long without reason, or their account is deleted XD.
To take a character, post on their bio. Depending on how long the character's been sitting there or how important they are, you may recieve a small Chaos allocation as a token of our thanks ^^
IF YOU WANT TO MAKE MODIFICATIONS TO THE BIO, we'd prefer if you posted your intentions on the bio, then re-posted it, so that we can check out your modifications. The easiest way to do so is to use the 'fork thread' option. Then, as long as you tick the 'quote message' box, you can re-post the same bio in the creation board. Much easier for all concerned :) (Don't forget to post on the bio, though, so we don't think you're just ripping off of them ;) )
If you're not modifying an already-accepted character, you don't need to wait for it to be re-accepted. On the other foot, if the bio is incomplete, the you can complete and modify it to your satisfaction.

The bio's original character still holds first choice and the rights to their character, whether you have modified it or not. This is only fair.

But if you return to the site and your character has been taken, well, we're sorry: really we are. But if you want your character back, you'll have to take that up with its current role-player.
