IC RULES | BIOS | SPECIES | LENGTH |
CLARIFICATION: Any board that is in the Myst is only accessible by the Infected or the Chimera. Unless you want your character to become a mindless automaton or a brutal, semi-bipolar monster, I suggest no Myst-walking is attempted. A further note: Your character can be anything from a thief to a Lord, and we will not bat an eyelid. Think of this city as a sort of medieval melting pot... but with technology bursting like a hot, beef-scented bubble. People used to have cars and such, -cellphones are still the norm- but few people in the middle and lower districts can afford the extravagant power or gas bills. The scientists have 'bought' most of the cars and other large, obvious items from the citizens, so having one in the lower or middle district is either a sign of wealth... or of stupidity. In the upper district, cars are perfectly normal. There is, in fact, an actual dividing line between the highest and the middle districts: medieval chaos on one side, and modern eloquence on the other. The architecture is stunningly different: one side with its tall, wooden-and-white-wash apartments, and the other with its charming, modern style -occasionally taking its cue from the middle district and going for an elegant historical style.
Bios Obviously, you must create a bio and wait for it to be accepted by an admin before you are allowed to post on the RP boards. As you can see by some of the already accepted bios, the code is optional. Just give us a basic description of your character, their name, background, and personality, and the admins should have no problem with it. Unless your character is a 'Sue. But more on those detestable creatures later.
Species So far, we only allow two 'distinct' species; humans and Chimeras. (Chimeras are heavily restricted, so don't get your hopes up.) Experiments don't really qualify as a species, being a messy compound of many parts, and every one being different. Their genetic base is no different from the basics that they were made from --human, generally. There are a few loose threads detailing the specific traits, dos/don'ts, and appearances of each of the different species, so stay tuned if you need more info. I'm pretty sure you can figure humans out for yourself.
Swearing As long as ever second word isn't a cuss of some kind, we're not fussed about swearing here. Go nuts, or don't: we don't care.
Post Length At FE, we pride ourselves on accepting anyone who can string a sentence together; short or long, it matters not to us. OK, so we expect you to write at least four full sentences, and that's still a requirement, but it's not too hard to fill. No, there are only a few things the staff will really come down hard upon the unwary for, and these are as follows: Grammar and Spelling, Power-Playing/God-Moding, Rule-Breaking
Grammar should be self-explanatory; it is none too hard to examine a post for errors, or to send it through a reputable word processor. Spelling comes under the same roof; all posts should be as clean as you can get them. It's only common sense, really. The occasional typo is perfectly fine, just don't make them a habit. If you can't keep the literacy up, we will give you a light reminder and a few pointers... But if the illegibility continues, we'll modify your posts for you, and add to your warning meter. Only if we absolutely can't read it, of course! Unfortunately, I have recently snapped in terms of grammar. While Laz is building a tolerance, my own ability to ignore 'ur', 'i', and 'wat' has dwindled until it no longer exists. I will modify your posts myself if I see such flagrant errors. Don't take it to heart. It's just evidence of the illiteracy of the world screwing my mind far too tight, and something had to give.
No power-playing (also known as 'bunnying'...?). Basically, you cannot make another player's character move. If they say their character frowns, only then will your character see them frown. You cannot make them do or say anything that their player has not made them say. You can infer -if she's smiling, she's happy with a) something you've done or said, b) something someone else has done, or c) something she's done. Sometimes things are misinterpreted; it's a fact of being human. But we, and our characters, don't each have a different all-powerful being in our heads controlling us like puppets and shaping the world how they want. Same applies to god-moding. God-moding is similar, most commonly used in fight situations. It's when a character dodges a blow that would be impossible to miss in real life, or specifically says that their character has landed a blow, instead of allowing the opponent to dodge or defend. There's more on fighting later, but suffice to say that god-moding (becoming 'god-like', or invincible) is not acceptable. Obvious rule-following? No double-posting. If you want to post with a new character in the same thread, and you chose not to make separate accounts for each -many of us don't- just modify your initial post and add in the second person. You're welcome to combine two characters into one post, too, if you wish. Just remember to give others somewhere to sneak their own posts in. As to 'person', we're none too fussed whether you post in first or third. Obviously, second person is way out of the ball-park, but you're smart enough to figure that out. Oh, and if you're going to use first person, make sure we can tell who you're posting with: a fancy title to your post with character's name will suffice ^^.
Other than that, please be sensible, and don't take a slight on your character as a slight on you; we all try to be friends here... But that's not often the case with IC ;).
Mary-Sues Quite a few times now, you may have heard us mention these; Sues, Mary-Sues, Gary-Stus and other variants are a common occurence across the web. Fading Echoes is one of the many sites that do not allow them.
A Mary-Sue is commonly acknowledged as a a character with little or no flaws, a perfect appearance, and a generally unrealistic personality. She can also be loved by everyone she meets, forgiven for even the most horrific crimes and always comes up with the fool-proof solution to save the heroes, kill the bad-guys, and find love... Usually with more than one of the main characters. Equally, there are the Gary-Stus -basically a male version of a Sue. Either incredibly handsome or unnecessarily scarred or evil in appearance, they are less common, but equally as unbelievable in appearance, nature, and history. They generally get the 'My family was murdered by so-and-so, and now my one goal in life is to kill them. After that? Well, I'll get the most beautiful girl here and generally live happily ever after' line. Please, to lower the chance of your character being a Sue, give your character some flaws, both in appearance and personality. Don't make her/him perfect at anything (though s/he can be very skilled, depending on age and background), give him/her an un-stereotyped or uncommon history, and don't play the 'they killed my family and now I'm going to kill them!' card, especially if you can't play it in a believable manner. If you need more help on telling the various trait of May-Sues, there'll probably be a good rant somewhere. This litmus test is a useful tool to see if your character has too many Sued traits. It's not always one-hundred-percent correct, but chances are that if Sally scores above the recommended level, she's a qualified 'Sue. Believe me, it is possible to get less than sixty!
Fighting IC Fights will always be moderated by a staff member. Please PM one of us as soon the fight begins; we'll just be monitoring, to make sure that everyone keeps their noses clean. So, once the fight begins, remember to take into account each character's comparative strengths, weaknesses, and experience. Obviously, if a Chimera takes on a human, the human will be mince-meat before he/she can squeak. Still, if you play the Chimera, don't forget that your character should have weaknesses too. Remember not to assume that your attack will hit; state what will happen in the event of a hit, and in the event of a miss.
There is a two attack or two dodge maximum allowed per post. (So one attack and one dodge, or two of each) I won't say that there are a certain amount of dodges before you have to be hit, because that doesn't take into account varying skills and strengths. But each character must get hit at least once in the fight. The staff member moderating the fight will tell you if either character is being unfair.
Mating/Birthing No sex is to be RPed on FE. Take it to e-mails, not PMs on this site. You can have them leave the scene or take it to anything up to passionate kissing and light, hands-on-face/chest fondling, then fade to black. We're happy for you to state what happened later on; it's an important area of a relationship, after all. But just to reiterate: none of this is to be role-played anywhere on Fading Echoes. We are not a porn site, thanks, and role-playing no nudity is also a requirement. If your character is a stripper or a hooker, it'll be harder to stick to this rule, I know. But you don't have to role-play them at work; before or after is perfectly fine. I trust you to be intelligent enough to find a way to stay on the right side of the law.
Mating is only allowed within a species. This should be self-explanatory, but just to make certain that no-one tries it... After all, if you're looking for pleasure, you don't try with a cat. That's just... wrong. Even if your character is... that way inclined, obviously you're not going to role-play it, and neither party will get impregnated. Laws of physics/biology, people. (Ergo the neko-esque, unless they're experiments, will not exist.) Experiments are a slightly different story: as long as they are still mostly human, attraction and intercourse are permissible... If you don't role-play it. Shifters, obviously, can go for just about anyone, as long as the two are in the same form when this occurs.
If you want your character to become pregnant, please let a staff member know. We reserve the right to deny your request for any reason, but this is unlikely. You're welcome to role-play the birth, provided you don't go overboard with the gore, m'kay? (Time-lapse style may be good for this.)
Permitted combinations are: -> HumanX Human. ...Isn't it obvious? -> Experiment X Experiment. Provided that the experiment's.. *hem* genital regions... were not effected in any way by tests, and are still mostly human. After all, many experiments are still bipedal primates, under all their modifications. The child will, of course, be 100% human (unless the parent/s are genetically modified). -> Experiment X Human. See above. -> Shifter X Any Species Provided that at the time of mating, both were in the same form. The offspring will go to species of the dominant gene (ie, the not-Shifter), regardless of gender. So yes, a female shifter can have a Chimera child. A female Shifter can have any kind of child, and a male can sire any species. (More about this in the Shifter thread.) -> Shifter X Shifter This is the only possible combination for a shifter child.
There will be more about each combination in the species' threads.
Monsters Say your character is a bounty hunter, and you want to set them on a chase for some extra Chaos. For the average class and up, the NPC < BOUNTY > will stand in for the animal. The character in question will actually have to set a trap, give chase, and kill the animal before any Chaos will be allocated, with the animal being role-played by the NPC account. You don't necessarily have to be a bounty hunter to be allocated the normal Chaos, but remember that selling pelts IC will get you less IC money, because you're not 'qualified'.
If you want to know how a successful hunt will be decided, check in the thread. Using the 'dice' code from Wonder of ProBoards support will determine the likelihood of a successful catch/kill. The NPC will post in the bounty board, with the name of the hunter and their skill in the title, so that you can see the results of the dice roll.
IC Currency Untill a name is sorted out -probably later this week- the IC currency has no particular name. Just refer to his as 'dollar's or 'cash' or something XD. Shouldn't be too hard to get around that... small *cough* issue ;)
