F.A.Q | QUESTION | QUERY | QUIPPING | Naturally, here are a few questions, tidied together for general info. If any questions or answers used here are from other Experiments, you can find their names noted underneath their additions to this de-delighted design. Feel free to ask any of your own in the board :)
| BASIC KNOW-HOW |
[ + ] What is this place?
This, dear reader, is Fading Echoes, a still-pretty-new site by Echo and Fallen. We're all willing to answer any questions you may have. Don't hesitate to ask us anything... especially if it's a joke. We all love a good laugh! :D [ + ] I mean what's this world?
Ah, sorry. This world is called Valmordia, a slightly chilly little planet in an alternate universe, on a slightly alternate Earth. We have humans, all the normal species, but also a few others. And as Valmordia is slightly cooler than Earth, lizards and sphinx cats and the like are extinct species. Valmordia is orbited by three moons -Jungsa (JUNG-sah), Timer (tem-ER), and Lillia (lil-e-a)- and only two seasons -the warm season of Sunwe (SUN-wei) and the cold of Yughan (yug-*Guttural noise*AAN). However, we're slowly cutting down the role-playable areas to just Theranse, which, after all, is the whole subject and chief setting of our plot. With any luck, this will give you a more in-depth role-play, rather than just the vague stuff that we have at the moment. [ + ] How old is it, then?
This site? Only a month or five, really, but we and many of our Experiments have been role-playing or writing much longer! 18th of May, 2009 was the day the site was created, and once everything's done to our satisfaction, we'll have a completion celebration. Do be there for it ^^
[ + ] How do I make a character?
Well, once you've signed up (don't forget to activate your account!), your posting options open up. You're now a proper member of our forum, welcome! So, then you can skip along to the rules, absorb all the information you need, and, if your head isn't spinning yet, totter along to the >> new souls board. I'm sure by then you'll have decided what kind of character you want, so just choose the form you want... Unless you don't even want to use a form! We do give you the option, as long as you give us the information we need :) Just choose to use it or not, but fill it out completely. You'll have as long as you need. If you want to make a Shifter, please note that we haven't made a form for them, and probably won't until there are a few more animals for them to acquire. Sub-species of experiments, apart from the lovely Chimera, just use the Experiment form (the blue one).
The deep blue form is for humans, neon green for scientists, dark pink for experiments, and tarnished white for the Chimera. [ + ] But... there's so much information! What if I can't remember it all?
Oh, that's perfectly alright! It'll take a little bit for everything to come together, and then it will start to make sense. But for now, check through what we've got. You're always welcome to volunteer to help, or to critique anything. Besides, with this whole cutting down thing, you only need to know cultures or races as background information. [ + ] Do I have to wait for my character to be accepted?
Most definitely! Just to make sure everything's in it's right place, and it's up to scratch. Once you remove the 'WiP' from the title, an admin will probably be all over accepting it like white on rice. Once they are accepted, the whole of Theranse is open to you. [ + ] Um... Is this site based on an old video game?
Nope, we're an original site. 'Myst' just happens to have the same spelling as the video game, I'm afraid. Although you are welcome to add an ancient tome to our recommendations board, if you wish. No, this Myst is a plot conceived by the fantastic Echo. It's a sort of sentient parasite that takes the form of a mist. It has a single conciousness, so although there are multiple bodies infected, they are all controlled as part of a single, all-enveloping mind. The down side is, the mist-like substance that the parasite travels in must expand before it can take over an area, so the parasite and those infected by it can move only within the Myst itself. Too complicated yet? I'll back up a notch.
The Myst is defined as the sentient parasite that controls anything within its reach, but Myst is also used to define the mist-like substance that the parasite travels in. A bit like 'nail' and 'finger-nail' One obviously applies to the nail on a finger, usually the white part, but the other could mean a toe-nail, or all of the nail. See? 'Myst' is the same: it either refers to the parasite, or both the parasite and the substance it travels in. With that said, Myst (as in both the substance and the parasite) covers most of Valmordia's surface, except in the middle of Oshuma, where the weather is too hot for anything to survive. When something is infected by the Myst, it has usually been lured into the Myst's embrace by one of its 'puppets', the creatures it has under its control. Some sing a sort of siren-song; others merely enchant the viewer, or fill them with blood-lust and desire to hunt. Not that the creatures have special powers... But standing near the Myst has a slightly hallucinogenic effect. One you step close enough for the Myst's parasite to capture you, all you have to do is breathe in. And as all animals must breathe, all animals can be infected. Even the plants in the Myst seem to look at you. The actual act of being infected, now. The pain is mostly mental: after all your conciousness is effectively being tied up in a black bag, bundled into a crate and shoved into a corner. You have no say any more. But while your body is no longer your own, and will never be your own again, the Myst does have one blessing. A drugged sleep.
No-one has yet been found who could regain control of their bodies, as the Myst is a private worker and tends to take the Infected deep into the forest before completely taking over. And as far as we know, there is no-one who ever will. [ + ] Creepy. But what's this stuff called 'Chaos'?
Shame, shame! There's a board where you can read about this, so you should check there first ;). Chaos is a sort of site-wide coinage that you earn by making a bio, or posting IC. You earn Ç3 per post or bio. Make all your five bios at once, and you earn Ç15, which can buy you horns for one experiment -or claws- five bottles of wine, various batteries, chocolate, a food crate, or one tank of gasoline. Obviously, all these things are for use IC. Your character can find them, or purchase them with the currency of wherever they are. The use of 'Chaos Tokens' in this area is to make sure that not everybody has certain things IC, and to give you something worthwhile for your posting. (Remember, Chaos isn't the coinage of any continent in Valmordia, so you don't call it Chaos IC :) Eventually the currency will have a name; probably 'dollar' XD.) [ + ] Are there other ways to earn Chaos?
Sure, you can earn some cash in other ways. Your character will, eventually, be able to get a paying job, and you will get a certain amount of Chaos for... Well, it's not really sorted out yet. But your character can become a bounty hunter, a pretty respectable trade. Catch a few of the pesky critters that overrun the rural regions, and your fellow'll get paid pretty well by the local outpost for any tails or skins he or she brings in. [ + ] How many characters can I have?
Five is our maximum here. Generally, we prefer you to keep all your characters on one account, but as long as you link to your main account in the signature of each, you can have one per character... And please use the same e-mail address. ^^ [ + ] Can I make a character based on _______ ?
I'm sorry, but no. If you want to make Harry Potter, a WoW mage, Naruto, or Kylie Minogue, I'm sure you can find a role-play site with any one of those themes. Please don't take the character ideas that others have made, and don't base them on famous people in this way. If you want to add a few of their personality traits, or use them as a play-by, that's fine, but don't completely mimic them in every way. Oh, and your character shouldn't have the name of any real person. I'm sure you're creative enough to give them a new one, all to themselves. [ + ] I really want to make a werewolf/faerie/vampire/etc. Pretty please?
Y'know, I think I'm going to say... Depends. Naturally, if you're going to go around saying you're a fairy/faerie/of fae species, then the answer is no. However. Think about how you can make an experiment (because obviously they'll have to be) based on them. A human who can't produce blood for themselves? Someone whose limbs, over the course of a month, will shift between wolf and canine-human? Taking a familiar part of mythology and making it your own is far more exciting than just playing by the same old stereotypes. [ + ] Can I buy anything with karma?
That's like asking if love will buy you a new car. Karma is respect, really, so feel free to use your vote fairly, and in any direction you wish. (You'll note that it's under 'Alignment'.) Seeing as the admins *cough* Echo *cough* love to stuff around with karma so much, yours may suddenly sky-rocket :) [ + ] How do I become staff?
We'll choose staff when we need them ^^ It's all based on good behavior, so obviously any candidates must have no warnings, not be currently banned, and not be under probation. Also, begging does nothing ;). The only staff positions are currently admin (< ViRUS > or < ViRUS MASTER >), global mod (< global virus >), and mod, whose title I do not recall, probably because we have none. Maybe we will introduce head advertisers. Maybe we will introduce designers, coders, or plot developers... (Actually, I like that last one!) But for now, we'll stick with what we've got.
| MORE IN-DEPTH |
[ + ] Can my experiment wander around Theranse?
Again, the answer depends on how creative you want to be with your background. If your character is on some kind of good behaviour record, and if your scientist will allow it, then certainly, you're wlcome to traverse the city. Experiments who have successfully fled the laboratory's clutching fingers -no mean feat by any standards- will probably hang around the lower city, as the upper class tend to be more loyal to the scientists, and will dob in even a funny-looking human. The sewers are a favourite hang-out for these undergrounders, even though they are highly patrolled. Anyone with sewer duty is easy to bribe out of a certain area; why would they want more work?
